Honey Bee Watch

Join the global coalition identifying and protecting free-living honey bees. Become a Bee Guardian and help us find the colonies that are surviving against the odds.

How It Works

Spot.

Find a free-living nest (in a tree, building, or cave).

Report.

Create an account and log the location, nest type, and environment.

Monitor.

Return to update the status. Long-term survival data is the key to understanding resilience.

Why are we collecting data?

Most managed honey bees require human treatment to survive pests and diseases. However, some "Survivor" populations might exist in the wild without help. By mapping free-living colonies, scientists can better understand the biological traits that enable them to resist threats naturally.

Honey Bee Watch is also a research partner of FREE-B, a scientific project which is studying free-living colonies in France, Ireland, Poland, Portugal, and Sweden. FREE-B is funded by Biodiversa+, the European Biodiversity Partnership, and co-funded by the European Commission (GA No. 101052342), France Agence Nationale de la Recerche, Ireland Environmental Protection Agency, Poland National Science Centre, Portugal  Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Sweden Formas.
